Project 2
For this assignment, we were tasked to make an editorial illustration from an urban legend of our choice using the art deco style. Although using an urban legend from our home country was advised, I decided to use an urban legend from Japan because I had more ideas for it and we were allowed to do so.
My choices came down to Kuchisake-onna [口裂け女 - Slit-mouthed woman] and Akai heya [赤い部屋 - The Red Room Curse]. In the end, I decided to make an editorial illustration from Kuchisake-onna. I made some sort of mind map so I had a better idea on what to do, along with my idea for the animation.
Although Kuchisake-onna is commonly depicted wearing a surgical mask, I had decided to make her wield a hand fan in place of a mask. This was done to better fit the Edo period, which was when this urban legend started circulating after gaining a resurgence in the 1970s. I then made a moodboard to shape an idea of what I wanted for the assignment.
Creating the moodboard was what me decide to make her color scheme red, black, and yellow, since I felt that the red and yellow contrast with a darker blue background, and, well, Kuchisake-onna is always depicted with black hair. I also made her skin white because she is depicted with pale skin. I had planned on making her kimono predominantly black at first, but I scrapped it because I wanted her to have more color. I proceeded to sketch down my idea for what I wanted along with the animation keyframes.
With all of that, I proceeded to making the illustration. Most of which I did in adobe illustrator, then I made some adjustments in after effects (Which was not final, but done to better visualize my idea for it).
I then animated the poster in after effects to show the transition between the first and second keyframe.

I then digitized the sketches in adobe illustrator, then put all the frames together to create a triptych

I used the color blue for the man as a contrast to Kuchisake-Onna, and tried my best to make a triptych that can effectively summarizes the urban legend in three images.
